The younger generation in Poland is protesting ACTA and more: the failed transition.
Poland is protesting online and on the street in the biggest youth demonstrations since 1989. The pretext is the government's signing of ACTA, which jeopardizes Internet freedom. But there're more reasons for discontent: a transition which has strengthened economic inequalities and lack of perspectives for the younger generation. As sociologist Adam Ostolski writes, "Life in Poland is getting harder, the privatisation-by-stealth of health service and education is going o , the prices of municipal services and staple foods are rising. Poland is now the leading country in Europe in terms of non-permanent job contracts." Hence social anger today. The protests change into a civil society movement, a Solidarity 2.0. I hope that this citizens' mobilisation will not exclude migrants and minorities. A good sign is that alternative collectives (Rozbrat in Poznan and Tektura in Lublin) are at the forefront of these events. "Ordinary people" in Poland are demanding their rights - at long last. To nie tylko protesty wobec ACTA. To ruch niezadowolenia, oburzenia, wołania o zmianę. Znamienny jest transparent "Wolność umarła młodo: 1989-2012". Transformacja przyniosła elementy demokracji, ale bez sprawiedliwości; nasiliły się nierówności ekonomiczne. Młodzi nie mają perspektyw - i ich/nasza furia opanowała internet i ulicę. Publiczny gniew rozpoczął ruch obywatelski. Oby obywatele nie wykluczyli migrantów, mniejszości. Taka większościowość (nacjonalizm, który przeżarł Solidarność) jednak tu nie grozi, bo w protestach biorą udział kolektywy alternatywne: Rozbrat w Poznaniu, Tektura w Lublinie. "Zwykli ludzie" wreszcie dopominają się o swoje prawa.
